November 18, 2009

Lincoln Square Theatre is this week's Chamber Member of the Week.

The Lincoln Square Theatre, located at 141 N. Main St. in Downtown Decatur, first opened in October, 1916.The building was considered to be one of the finest facilities of its kind.

The proud history of this elegant center for the arts includes famed performers such as Ethyl Barymore, Al Jolsen, Anna Pavlova, Jack Dempsey, Harry Blackstone and Bob Hope. Just to mention a few.

In 1990, the Lincoln Square Theatre, Inc. formed a not-for-profit organization, dedicated to the preservation and restoration of this historic theatre in Decatur, Illinois.

The mission is to be a core attraction to downtown Decatur, providing Decatur and surrounding communities with a quality venue for the performing arts, education and entertainment.

The Theatre not only brings in entertainment, but also rents the space for community events.

In 2005, phase one restoration began with a $3.5 million grant. The effort has been extensive and many projects have been completed so far to get us closer to restoring this landmark to its former grandeur.

Come to the Lincoln Square Theater on December 5 to see Al Huss's Rockin' Christmas show! Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 422-1711 or visit the theatre online at www.lincolnsquaretheatre.com
